Once in a while what seems like a good idea turns out instead to be a great idea.  Ideas like the Multiplex and more recently the 2015 Oregon Doubles Classic have proved that occasionally a good idea catches fire and the results are nothing short of overwhelming.

The Oregon Doubles Classic became a reality based loosely on a Doubles Marathon shot at several clubs in Canada.  The rules were structured to encourage club participation, individual improvement and standings within the competition and culminating with an excellent dinner/trophy presentation.  Here is an overview of how the Classic is structured; some outrageous statistics and finally the winners are identified.

Nine clubs participated (more are already committed for next year-including BKS), 16 shoot dates (events), each event was up to 500 doubles targets offered the day before a scheduled shoot at the participating clubs.  Shooters were classed at the first event entered and remained there for the Classic.  A minimum of 1500 targets were required to qualify for trophies.  Shoot more than the minimum and your standing was based on the best 15 scores shot.  Shooters with the 1500 minimum and their spouses were treated to a free steak dinner at the trophy presentation banquet held at Portland Gun Club.   Near the end of the competition it became a free for all as shooters traded the lead in their classes with lower scores being dropped like flies.  Rumor has it that James Adair gained 34 targets at the Bend event taking him into the lead for C class held by Tim Plagman prior to that.

  • 91 participants, 113,800 targets thrown, $1138.00 OSTA fees paid, $858.00 PITA daily fees paid.
  • $400.00 added money paid out on the finale at Portland. Winners were A: Fred Coulson 478/500, B: Steve Kaufman 466/500 , C: James Adair 445/500, D: Chuck Haas 356/500
  • 8 trophy buckles awarded.
  • 56 free dinners served.
  • Four $25.00 cash drawings – awarded at the banquet.  You had to be present to win.  These awards went to Mike Riggs, Chuck Haas (2x winner) and Steve Kaufman.
  • A Ruger 22 rifle donated by Portland Gun Club was won by Ernie Teachman.  Each shooter registering at least 1,500 targets received one chance to win for every 100 targets shot.  The top chance to win went to Mike Riggs who had 59 of the 808 tickets.  Mike’s name was drawn and he donated the gun to be redrawn, taking a $25 cash prize in exchange.  Second best odds to win went to Durland Fischer – 55 tickets.  Lucky Ernie only had 20 tickets in the bucket!

NEW for the winter season….REGISTERED SUB-GAUGE!  In addition to the regular 50 singles, 50 handicap and 50 doubles we will try 50 singles SUB-GAUGE.  If this is something you would like to try at your club please contact the PITA office for details (still in the development stage).  This initial event will allow either .410, 20 gauge or 28 gauge (this will need to be included in your report).  These are registered PITA targets and all PITA rules apply.  The targets are not calculated in your regular average but will have their own average.  In the future you will have SUB-GAUGE AVERAGE CARDS.  These targets will be included in your target total for milestone awards.

Let’s have some FUN!
